Adding the gateway 10.1.2.1 on the system tab also worked. Thanks for the tip.

In the end I used the Static route to gateway 10.1.1.0\24 with next hop 10.1.2.1 because adding the route did not require restarting the ERX whereas saving the system tab change did require restart.
