Hello,
I've just purchased a FiberPoE and SFP module and I have started doing some testing on the bench, but I'm having some issues getting the unit working how I envisaged.
Essentially I want to use the unit as a media converter, the scenario is that I have two buildings connected by underground CAT5 but both buildings are supplied by different power supply which causes an earth / ground potential difference which can cause issues, so that I was looking to do was install the FiberPoE in building B but powered by PoE injector from building A via the PoE port (with the LAN port of the injector connected to a switch) and then have a fibre patch lead from the FiberPoE to a switch in building B. From what I read in this forum, and in the quick start guide this seems to be an acceptable configuration, but I can't get it to work. (See: http://community.ubnt.com/t5/EdgeMAX-Stories/FiberPOE-two-more-production-installs/cns-p/1521011)
On the bench I am powering the FiberPoE by an injector (which came with a UAP) with the LAN port of the injector to a router and the power output to the PoE port to the FiberPoE. I then have a MikroTik fibre module in the SFP port of the FiberPoE connected to an HP ProCurve switch using an HP Fibre module.
Using this configuration, which the manual seems to suggest will work doesn't. Everything powers up and works except for the connection to the router via the lan port on the injector.
I have performed a number of troubleshooting tests on the individual components and everything tests out ok. If I power the FiberPoE by the DC RJ45 power port (instead of the PoE port) by the injector and then run another cable from the PoE port to a laptop this works (which kind or rules out the fibre side of things being at fault) but as soon as I introduce a switch between the laptop and the FiberPoE the pings time out and it all stops working again. But even with this configuration, this doesn't really work in my scenario.
Also trying just a laptop connected to the injector LAN port as per the original configuration (in place of the switch) also doesn't work.
Any advise would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Tom
