No, firmware update check can not be disabled.

Sure (and that's a nice feature to have) but some people would surely want to disable it anyway.
greigm gave one example, I'd like to add another one: not liking "call home" type communication between a device and a third party (even if that's the designer of the device), for privacy/security/whatever reason.
