Re: ER DHCP server without a broadcast interface

Ditto, wondering if anyone has gottent this to work.

While the ER router has a tremendous feature set, I would love to use it soley as a DHCP server.

This is my preferred scenario - configure DHCP scopes that don't have a corresponding sub interface on the ER.  Configure my L3 switch with a helper-address pointed to the ER.  The ER would eliminate the need to have a Windows or Linux box act as a DHCP server - instead the ER serves this purpose.

If the above doesn't work, would this be the fallback method?

Create subinterfaces on the ER and create DHCP scopes for each subnet.  Connect ER to L3 switch using a trunk. Clients on each subnet would send DHCP broadcast and ER would respond on the applicable subinterface.  I don't see a reason on why this wouldn't work unless the ER needs to be the default gateway for clients.

In both of the above scenarios, the default GW would be the L3 switch and not the ER.

Would either of these scenarios work and if so, which edge router could I use for up to 100 devices - the cheapest $50 one or???.  The daily limit would be about 20 devices with a peak of 100+ for an event.

Thanks,

Gary
