Found the answers. And they took a lot of work to find...!!!!! Especially when you're not a Network Guru.......
Issue 1.
The 4G modem I use issues DHCP on the 192.168.1.0/24 network. So the laptop was given an IP of 192.168.1.100. After establishing the VPN link, Openvpn pushed a DNS of 192.168.1.215. And that seems to have created an issue, where the laptop could not figure out where to send packets. In fact, the whole 192.168.1.0/24 network fell out completely.
One of my internal VLANs is 192.168.1.0/24.
So that answers dropped pings, and no access to any services on the 192.168.1.0/24 network. The 4G moden now issues IP's on a different range now.
Issue2.
My internal DNS is set to reject unknown LANs. And guess what LAN was missing? Yep, the typical Openvpn 10.8.0.0/24.
So, it's all up and running again.
