Without the switch each of your ports would behave as individual interfaces with their own IPs and you would requiring routing for anything connected to one port to communicate with anything connected to another. If you're used to your typical Netgear/D-Link/Linksys/whatever consumer gear, this is how they're setup: 1 WAN port routed to a switch of usually 4 ports for the LAN with a NAT firewall in between. You should now have this setup on your EdgeRouter.
