Using hairpin NAT and port-forwarding - dangerous
Using a VPN - much safer and will keep your connection secure.

Can you describe the function of this device?
If it's not a modern webserver or something that is regularly updated, I highly recommend not putting it out on the internet.
Shodan regularly sweeps the internet logging all visible/unsecured devices.

First, use a VPN to manage all internal devices on the network.

If you have to put it on the public side, use a very strong set of usernames and passwords with SSL.
I also recommend using Cloudflare to add a layer of DDoS protection for all of the websites you want to host.
