I prefer labbing stuff up first , so I can make mistakes without bothering customer.....
At the openvpn server side (ubuntu box) , start by not pushing any route the client.
Also, make sure the openvn interface address doesn't conflict with heavily used LAN ranges, like 192.168.0.0/24
